Grantham takes its name from the original Grantham Township, one of the Niagara Peninsula's first surveyed townships, settled by Butler's Rangers and United Empire Loyalists in the late 1700s. Most of the township was absorbed into St. Catharines in 1961, and the name now identifies the city's north end, broadly the residential districts north of the Queen Elizabeth Way. It is a settled, family-oriented part of the city characterized by post-war homes, mature streets, parks and long-standing institutions such as the Grantham Lions Club and community centre.
