Smithville is the largest community and administrative seat of West Lincoln Township, sitting on Twenty Mile Creek in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula. United Empire Loyalists led by the Griffin family settled it in 1787 as Griffintown, and it was later renamed for the family matriarch, Mary Smith. Long a farm-service town nicknamed the 'Chicken Capital of Canada' for its poultry industry, it remains the township's civic and commercial hub. Visitors recognize it for the annual Smithville Fair, its restored 1903 railway station, and a walkable historic main street.
