Ridgeway is a small unincorporated village named for the limestone ridge its main street follows, which grew from a late-18th-century Loyalist farming settlement into a railway service village after the Buffalo, Brantford and Goderich Railway arrived in the 1850s. It is best known nationally as the site of the 1866 Battle of Ridgeway, the first industrial-era battle fought and led entirely by Canadians, now commemorated at a National Historic Site. Its preserved main-street core has become a destination for antique shops, cafes, and a popular seasonal market.
