Virgil lies along Four Mile Creek just southwest of Old Town and began as a United Empire Loyalist settlement known as The Crossroads, later Lawrenceville, before the post office adopted the name Virgil in 1862. In the early-to-mid 20th century it became home to a substantial Mennonite community that had emigrated from Russia. Today Virgil houses the town's municipal government and a large sports park, and hosts the annual Virgil Stampede over the Victoria Day weekend.
