Crowland is a historic former township, organized in 1788 and named after a town in Lincolnshire, England, that was amalgamated into the City of Welland in 1970. First settled by veterans of Butler's Rangers, it developed as an inland farming district and later a heavily industrial, working-class area, and it lends its name to the Welland-Crowland War Memorial. Its distinct blue-collar, immigrant identity was cemented during the Great Depression by the 1935 Crowland relief strike, a landmark episode in Canadian labour history. Today it is recognized as one of Welland's older established residential districts rather than a modern branded subdivision.
