Dain City occupies the southern tip of Welland, nearly encircled by the old and new Welland Canal channels after the 1970s bypass turned it into a peninsula reached mainly by tunnel. It began as the rail-junction settlement of Welland Junction and grew into a company town built by the Dain Manufacturing Company, later absorbed by John Deere, which anchored the local economy until the plant's 2009 closure. The adjacent old canal now serves as the Welland Recreational Waterway, and the tucked-away enclave keeps a close-knit, out-of-the-way character.
