Humberstone is a historic community and former incorporated village that sits at the heart of present-day Port Colborne. Settled by Loyalist families in the late 1700s, its canal-side core was once a village known as Petersburgh, or Stonebridge, and grew into an important station on the Welland Railway alongside the Welland Canal. It remained a separate municipality until it merged with the Town of Port Colborne in 1952, with the surrounding township folded in during the 1970 regional restructuring. The Humberstone name endures today in local streets, schools, and the nearby limestone quarries.
