Sherkston is a small lakeside community on the eastern edge of Port Colborne, named for the pioneering Sherk family who settled the surrounding land. It is best known today for Sherkston Shores, a sprawling Lake Erie beach resort, and for the spring-fed Quarry, a former Empire Limestone operation that ceased work around 1917 and flooded, leaving submerged rail cars and locomotives that still draw swimmers and scuba divers. Its white-sand beaches and dunes make it one of the most visited destinations in the municipality.
