Port Robinson sits at the southern edge of Thorold, where the Welland Canal slices the community into two halves. Founded during the shipbuilding boom of the 1820s and originally named Port Beverley, it was once one of Niagara's busiest canal ports, crowded with inns, shops and shipyards. Today its signature feature is the little seasonal Bridge-It ferry that carries pedestrians and cyclists across the canal each summer, a legacy of the 1974 ship collision that toppled the old lift bridge and was never replaced.
