Thorold is a city that straddles the Niagara Escarpment along the Welland Canal, containing several of the canal's lift locks. It is best known for the twin "Flight Locks" (Locks 4, 5 and 6), which raise and lower ships nearly 140 feet up the escarpment over a short distance. The Lock 7 Viewing Complex is a popular vantage point for watching ships transit the canal.
