Chippawa is a historic riverside village at the mouth of the Welland River (locally Chippawa Creek), about 2 km upstream of the falls on the Niagara River. It grew up around Fort Chippawa and the Portage Road in the 1790s, was the site of the War of 1812 Battle of Chippawa, and later became home to Laura Secord. It retained its own post office and identity until amalgamating into Niagara Falls in 1970, and remains a distinct boating and small-town community today.
