Effingham is a tiny historic hamlet in the Short Hills of northern Pelham, tucked along Effingham Creek near the Twelve Mile Creek and bordering Short Hills Provincial Park. It began as a milling settlement called Beckett's Mills, tied to Loyalist David Secord and Quaker Samuel Beckett, and was renamed Effingham when its post office opened in 1850. Though its mills are long gone, it is still known for apple orchards and scenic Niagara Escarpment countryside.
