Merritt Island

Merritt Island is a slender strip of parkland created during the building of the Welland Canal, sitting between the Welland River and the now-recreational former canal channel and named for canal founder William Hamilton Merritt. Today it is one of the city's most popular green spaces, with about 4.2 kilometres of shaded paved and natural trails that form part of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, making it a favourite for walkers, runners, and cyclists. Along the way, visitors pass canal-era engineering, quiet river views, and interpretive plaques describing the successive canals that shaped the region, so a stroll here doubles as an easy history walk. The park also offers a children's play area, picnic tables, benches, washrooms, and parking, which makes it an accessible outdoor stop for families and a natural companion to a downtown mural walk.
