The skirmish at Cook's Mills on 19 October 1814 was the final clash of regular British and American troops on Canadian soil during the War of 1812, fought as an American column tried to seize grain stores from a British outpost along Lyons Creek. Though relatively small, it closed out the war's Niagara fighting, and the battleground was designated a National Historic Site in the 1920s.
The City of Welland maintains a driving-and-walking heritage trail with roughly seven interpretive stops, anchored by a Memorial Peace Garden overlooking Lyons Creek that displays the flags of Canada, Britain and the United States alongside panels recounting the battle. A separate commemorative cairn stands on the fields where the action took place, making the site a low-key but meaningful stop for history-minded visitors.
