Old Fort Niagara guards the northern mouth of the Niagara River, a position so strategically valuable that European powers fought for it across much of the 1700s. The fort's story reaches back to the earliest French outposts on the site, but its defining structure is the imposing stone building begun in 1726 and known today as the French Castle, one of the oldest buildings of its kind surviving in the region.
