Established in 1885 as the Niagara Reservation, this is recognized as the first state park in the country, its landscape shaped in part by designer Frederick Law Olmsted. The grounds hug the upper rapids and the brink of the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls, giving first-time visitors free, walk-in access to a string of dramatic viewpoints along paved paths and footbridges out to the islands.
Open year-round, the park functions as the gateway to the area's signature paid experiences, including the boat tour, the gorge boardwalks and the observation tower. Walking the shoreline and taking in the cascades costs nothing, making it an easy first stop for orienting yourself to the US side of the falls.
Entry and parking
Walking into the park is free; parking and attractions are separate. Lot 1 serves the Maid of the Mist ticket area, while Lot 2 on Goat Island serves Cave of the Winds. For standard cars, Lots 1 and 2 charge USD $10 Monday–Thursday and $15 Friday–Sunday through October 11, 2026, then $10 daily October 12–March 31, 2027. Lot 3 has a separate calendar, including no fee September 8–May 21.
Build a day on the U.S. side
Choose a walking route and then add the paid attractions you want. Maid of the Mist accepts online tickets but boards first come, first served; Cave of the Winds sells timed tickets in person. Check each attraction’s dates and leave time to walk between Prospect Point and Goat Island. The park is open year-round, but individual paths, decks and attractions may be restricted by conditions.
