Port Dalhousie grew up around the northern entrance of the early Welland Canals, and its twin range lighthouses — an outer light from the 1870s and an inner light rebuilt in the 1890s — once helped ships line up their approach to the narrow harbour mouth. Today the piers are one of St. Catharines' favourite free strolls: locals cast for salmon, migratory birds pass overhead, and the flat lakeside path runs out to the lighthouse at the tip for a classic photo.
The walk pairs naturally with the surrounding village of shops and patios and the neighbouring Lakeside Park beach, and it is especially loved at dusk when the sun sinks over Lake Ontario behind the lights.
