The Waterfront Trail is a long-distance signed route that follows the Canadian shore of the lower Great Lakes, and Niagara-on-the-Lake marks the point where its Lake Ontario portion begins and connects to the Niagara River Recreation Trail heading south. Around the town it passes historic sites, parkland and lakeside lookouts, with staging areas and parking near the waterfront and Fort George.
The trail is coordinated by the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, a charity that works with shoreline municipalities to keep the route mapped and signed. Surfaces here vary between paved path, boardwalk and gravel, so it suits relaxed riding and walking rather than a single uniform bike path, and it ties directly into the wider Greater Niagara Circle Route.
