On the farm fields beside the Niagara River, the Battle of Chippawa unfolded on 5 July 1814 as American regulars under Winfield Scott stood and defeated a British force in open combat, a result that signalled the growing discipline of the U.S. army and launched the gruelling Niagara campaign. The Niagara Parks Commission acquired the land in the 1990s and has kept it as open, largely undeveloped ground preserving the scene of the fighting.
Visitors explore the site on a self-guided walking route marked with interpretive panels that explain the movements and consequences of the battle, and an annual commemorative service each July honours the soldiers of all nations who fought here. Free to enter with on-site parking, it offers a quiet, contemplative counterpoint to the busier attractions of nearby Niagara Falls.
