Dufferin Islands is a small, tranquil retreat hidden in plain sight only a short distance above the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. A network of ponds, channels and tiny islets is stitched together by winding trails and wooden footbridges, creating a leafy maze that feels far removed from the crowds of the main Niagara Parks attractions.
Originally acquired by the Niagara Parks Commission in the late 1800s and later restored as naturalized habitat, the area now draws walkers, cyclists, anglers and families who come to feed the fish and watch for birds among the plantings. In the colder months the islands become one of the centrepieces of Niagara's winter light displays, but for most of the year it is simply a peaceful, free green space in which to slow down.
