Woodend Conservation Area caps a stretch of the Niagara Escarpment in the western reaches of Niagara-on-the-Lake, offering some of the finest panoramas in the region from the top of the slope out across the Lake Ontario plain and its patchwork of vineyards and orchards. Trails, including a segment of the Bruce Trail, wander through a hardwood forest dotted with Carolinian species, past meadows and the remnants of former estate grounds.
The height of land here once served as a vantage point during the War of 1812, and today the reserve is used for hiking, nature study and, in winter, quiet trail exploration. Operated by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, it stays open year-round from dawn to dusk.
